Some Old Testament Characters
(and their "claim to fame")

(in order of appearance)

God (See Genesis 1:1--before creation, God was already there!)

Adam & Eve (first humans)

Noah (built an ark)

Abraham (first received God’s promise of many descendants and promised land)

Isaac (Abraham’s son)

Jacob (Isaac’s son)

Joseph (one of Jacob’s 12 sons who became the head of the "twelve tribes of Israel")

Moses (led the Jewish people out of Egypt and to the promised land)  

Elijah (thought to be the greatest of the prophets)

Jonah (eaten by a whale, reluctantly did what God wanted him to do)

Joshua (helped the Jewish people conquer the promised land)

Samson (a strong man when his hair was long.  One of the judges of Israel.)

Samuel (the last judge of Israel)

King Saul (the first king of Israel)

King David (thought to be the greatest king of Israel)

King Solomon (last king before Israel split into north and south kingdoms)  

Assyrians (Israel's enemy who conquered the northern kingdom called "Israel")

Babylonians (Israel’s enemy who conquered Jerusalem and the southern kingdom called "Judah")

Ezra/Nehemiah (they led the Israelites as they rebuilt their kingdom)

 

Some New Testament Characters
(and their "claim to fame")

(in order of appearance)

Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist)

Mary (Jesus' mother--there are other women named "Mary" in the story, including sisters named Mary and Martha who often followed Jesus, and a woman named Mary who had been a prostitute)

John the Baptist (an unusual man who preached outside of Jerusalem, and baptized Jesus)

Jesus (the son of God!)

Simon Peter (called "Peter") a fisherman who became a disciple of Jesus'

Twelve disciples:  Simon Peter, his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (not Simon Peter--this one was called "The patriot," and is seldom heard from individually), Judas (the son of James) and Judas Iscariot (the one who eventually turned against Jesus)

The Apostle Paul (a former zealous Jewish man who converted to Christianity after participating in the persecution against Christians.  He went on to write many of the letters we find in the New Testament to some of the many churches he began throughout the ancient world)
